Locales other than English

It appears there is an issue with users who have their language and region format settings set to anything other than English. The app will crash when you try and press the first three icons on the Summary screen.

The fix is fairly simple. In the app, go to Settings -> User Diet settings, tap edit, and then make sure your Start Day of the Week is in the language set for the devices ‘Region Format’. If not, select the Start Day of the week and select the day from the list presented.

Thanks to a user in France for helping me track this down and find this work around. The fix for this will be in 1.7, but will only work for new users.

Version 1.7….working on it!

I didn’t finish it up as planned last weekend, but will this week. Also a reviewer would like the exercise duration input to be in minutes instead of hours. Sounds like a great idea (I mean what fraction of an hour is 20 minutes?), but I think I’ll make it user’s choice in the settings. All of my exercise entries are recorded in fractions of hours, so it would really mess me (and I suspect others) up.

Oh and I think I should find a new recipe to post!

HCG Diet – fad or dangerous?

Looking over this article at US News this seems like a very dangerous diet. Basically you eat 500 calories a day and get injected with a pregnancy hormone. Not my idea of nutritious or healthy. My biggest problem with ‘diets’ like these, besides the unhealthy risk,  is that you do not learn how to eat. So you stop your ‘diet’, go back to eating like you did before, and re-gain the weight.

I think learning how to eat correctly and modifying behavior for the rest of your life is the smarter way of losing weight and keeping it off.

Just my 2 cents!

National Nutrition Month

Here’s an article from US News on how to find healthy recipes online. Worth a read!

Version 1.7

I’ve heard from a few users and read the comments, so I know what I’m doing this weekend!

New features:

1. A separate points/points plus calculator available from the main screen for those who track by points/points plus (user requested)
2. The ability to create an item from the Quick Entry screen (user requested)
3. A water consumed versus weight loss chart   (user requested)

Bug fixes:

1. I don’t take into consideration the number of servings when you enter in a Quick Entry to calculate the cost.
2. Really an enhancement, not a bug, but for entry fields that are 0, when you edit that field, blank out the field so you don’t have to.

I’ll also go over the points plus calculations again, but everything I find says I got it right.

Hopefully I’ll finish this up by Sunday afternoon and have it submitted to Apple for review.

User Comments!

Yea someone posted a review with a few suggestions!

The first suggestion is to add more foods. I have been planning on cleaning out the built in food db. I thought the USDA db, which is what I used, to be effective, but after using it, even I can see it has limitations. I’ll search around for more foods to add to the list.

The second suggestion is to add functionality to group multiple food items together, e.g., group cereal and milk. This is a really intriguing idea. I need to think though on how to implement it to make it easy to use.

Thanks for the feedback, I always enjoy it!

Another great review yesterday suggested a feature I myself was just thinking of. On the quick entry screen, provide an option for saving to your food list. Expect that in a few weeks too (along with a bug fix that the reviewer discovered).

Version 1.6.3

Fixes some annoying UI bugs:

1. If you count calories, then on chart which shows numbers greater 999 the first digit was cut off on the left hand side
2. If you count calories, then the Budget versus Weight chart was useless as the weight values are too small compared to the Budget values, so the bars all looked to be the same height. I reduce the budget used by an order of magnitude to make the bars closer to each other
3. Some times, and I have noticed this too, the spinning wheel on the Food List or Activity List screens doesn’t go away. I made it an option to not see it at all.
4. If you do not have network connectivity and try to view the blog entries, you stuck with a spinning wheel
5. When adding a new weigh in, it was confusing to some users that date would be 7 days after your last weigh in, so I changed it to be the current date

Cashew Salmon with Apricot Couscous

I have a nice piece of salmon at home for this amazing looking recipe from Eating Well! I realize that 487 calories may seem like a lot, but remember this includes the couscous, so really it is the entire dinner, and look at all that potassium!

Per serving: 487 calories; 15 g fat (2 g sat, 6 g mono); 73 mg cholesterol; 65 g carbohydrates; 35 g protein; 9 g fiber; 527 mg sodium; 621 mg potassium.

Version 1.6.2

Has been submitted to Apple for review. This fixes the following two issues (thanks to users who found them and helped me track down the issues):

1. When trying to add a new entry from the food/exercise selection screen the app crashes on iOS 3.1.3 devices. iOS 4.0 and above are ok.
2. When entering in a new Exercise Log entry, the default for the time doesn’t work the same way as when entering in a new Food Log entry

There is still an issue on the charts when you count calories and view the weekly budget usage versus weight loss. The weight loss bars are not helpful because they are so small. I’m working on those!
